I worked as a clinical psychologist in the NHS for over 30 years but somehow always found time to make sculptures and other 3D works - mainly as therapy for myself. Eventually I decided to get some
formal art education by enrolling on the Foundation Degree course in Contemporary Art Practice, run by Shrewsbury College and Staffordshire University.
One result of being on the course was that I moved on from making relatively small-scale sculptures of the human form, to larger works, using a wider variety of materials and media. I also become interested in socially engaged and participatory art.
Among my recent projects have been a guerrilla art project about the myths and legends of Earl's Hill, near Pontesbury in Shropshire where I live, and the creation of a life-size wicker bull to act as a focus for a celebration of the legend of the ghostly Bagbury Bull in the village of Hyssington in Powys, Wales.
I created some works dealing with the legacy of the British Empire in India, and a series of works inspired by the 'Crow' poems of Ted Hughes. I have also been involved in a community arts project in the Stiperstones area of Shropshire to raise awareness of the drastic decline in the number of curlews, both locally and nationally.
Most recently, I made a 7 metre long willow otter for a campaign for Shropshire Wildlife Tust, and a chainsaw sculpture for the Community Library garden in Pontesbury.
