CURLEW COUNTRY (2016)
'The Seven Whistlers' was commissioned by the Stiperstones and Cordon Hill Landscape Partnership Scheme to help celebrate curlews in the landscape and to raise awareness of the recent drastic decline in their numbers, both locally and nationally. The seven birds contain small solar panels and LED lights which illuminate at dusk.
The work was unveiled at 'Curlew Country', a community arts event in July in the village of Norbury in South Shropshire. This involved music , singing, poetry and talks in the village hall before a lantern procession at dusk led the participants to view the ghostly curlews floating over a nearby pool. A specially composed piece of electronic music, 'Curlew Lament', by Adam Pickering was played over the PA system as part of the experience on this occasion. Below are a selection of photos taken at the event.
The picture above shows the sculpture on its second outing: on the Mere at Ellesmere as part of the Merefest 2016 festival. The full moon was an unexpected bonus!
